Member of editorial and production team for The Nation’s Health, working on reporting, editing and administration of newspaper, website, and other formats. Serve as reporter for newspaper, generating story ideas, carrying out research, conducting interviews, writing stories, editing and fact-checking. Work on stories relevant to Association and public health. Along with serving as general assignment reporter, covers APHA member group and Affiliate news beats. Serve as the newspaper’s liaison to APHA’s member groups and Affiliates, soliciting stories, keeping up with their activities, speaking at meetingsand encouraging their participation. Maintain running story ideas list for above. Contribute to monthly editorial list. Writes for Public Health Newswire and social media. Serve as a reporter at the APHA Annual Meeting, covering sessions and activities, as well as at hearings, news conferences and other events. Conduct science-based research. Review materials from scientific journals, reports and websites and other sources. Use to write stories that are well-researched, factual, and based on science. Create and edit content for The Nation’s Health website, including Resources and Newsmakers. Create photography schedule for APHA Annual Meeting photographer. Organize requests from staff, fact checks against meeting schedule and coordinates staff requests for photos post-meeting. Perform other duties as assigned.

Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field. At least five years’ experience reporting and interviewing for online publication, newspaper, magazine, or other news environment preferred. Familiarity with newspaper industry a plus. Strong knowledge of AP Style and journalism ethics and principles necessary. First-rate writing, editing, proofreading and specialized computer skills, including basic knowledge of web CMS, layout, and graphics programs such as Photoshop. Ability to learn and apply new computer skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Strong ability to work independently and as team member. Must be able to work quickly under pressure, multi-task and meet deadlines. Must be able to travel occasionally. Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.

Position is based in downtown DC near several metro stations. Hybrid work environment.

Hours: 35 hours a week, full-time, Monday - Friday (daytime). Number of openings: 1.
