We are currently looking for a market reporter/analyst to join our editorial freight team to cover freight markets and report on deals, price movements and market news and analysis. The team sits within the wider editorial group, comprising several hundred journalists globally.

The role also involves building strong relationships with industry contacts and market participants and provides scope for numerous networking opportunities.
The freight desk assesses key markets such as crude oil and refined oil products tanker freight rates globally as well as dry bulk freight rates. The global freight team has team members in Singapore, London and New York and the role involves collaboration with the rest of the global team. The desk’s coverage encompasses many globally traded commodities and will provide the successful candidate with access to a wide range of subjects and commodity-related knowledge, as well as with the opportunity to collaborate with other desks. The freight team also benefits from an exciting pipeline of projects and product development opportunities. As a member of this team, you will become familiar with all of these markets and get a chance to become an expert in one or more of them. You will be responsible for making daily price assessments and writing market commentaries, as well as writing news and in-depth analysis, and building our data coverage, for the daily publication.
You will work in tandem with other reporters, senior reporters, and editors who will provide training and support to develop in-depth knowledge of the markets. In-house training courses are regularly provided on technical skills as well as content-related courses, and new joiners are also provided with an online training platform.
What will you be doing?
You will collect market prices and make assessments, adhering to rigorous compliance standards. Write market commentaries, news, analysis and market outlooks; develop graphs and charts within Excel to illustrate trends and analysis; communicate this information in a timely manner to management and subscribers. Contribute to presentations as directed by management. Develop and maintain rapport with key contacts, and liaise regularly with industry stakeholders (buyers, sellers, traders, brokers) to gain market intelligence. Maintain existing databases and build new databases for designated products. Oversee methodology relevant to coverage, which includes timely communication of needed changes, additions or deletions. Cover conferences and events (local and regional). Provide subject-matter expertise to other Argus departments. Work on special projects as needed.
What we’re looking for in you:
A strong bachelor’s degree preferably in Shipping, Business, Communications, Journalism, Economics, Sociology, Humanities with 3 – 5 years of experience.
Strong writing, research, and analytical skills.
Excellent communication skills (a clear concise writing style is essential together with good verbal skills, listening techniques).
Interest in and enthusiasm for commodities, energy markets, global business, politics, and economics.
Industry knowledge is useful but not essential.
Proficient in Excel and other Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Proficiency in English; and preferably a second language.
Must possess the desire and ability to work in a team-orientated environment.
A self-motivated, well-organised and inquisitive nature. Able to work independently, whilst also engaging and collaborating in line with the Argus values: Passion, Integrity, Excellence and Results.
