Chronicles: A Magazine of American Culture seeks a full-time assistant editor. Chronicles is a leading opinion journal of the paleoconservative and populist right. Published in Middle America, Chronicles is aimed at providing intellectual stimulation for conservatives of all stripes through political and cultural essays and literature and film reviews. The assistant editor will work with the Chronicles editorial team to produce the monthly print magazine, daily content for the Chronicles blog, do social media promotion, and other tasks as assigned. The assistant editor should have experience in editing, copy editing, proofreading, in writing and reporting news and feature articles, and social media promotion.
Core responsibilities include:
Copy editing, proofreading, and fact checking content, including freelance, contributed, and staff articles.
Researching and writing online commentary pieces and enterprise features for the Chronicles print magazine.
Curating, uploading, and promoting content to the magazine’s online and social media channels.
Curating daily and weekly electronic newsletters.
Working with editorial team to identify stories.
Skill requirements:
Threeto-five years of editorial or reporting experience.
Proficiency in digital production tools (Abode InDesign/InCopy; content management systems; word processing and spreadsheet documents).
A track record of working well under tight deadlines.
A passion for, and understanding of, conservative politics, both social and economic.
Ability to write with clarity, insight, and depth in a timely manner.
Ability to assess the writing of others and to identify and remedy deficiencies in article submissions.
A sharp eye for detail and scrupulous attention to matters of grammar, punctuation, and typography.
A meticulous attitude toward factchecking and research.

ITO-Intelligentual Take Out - Assistant Editor Job Description
Assistant Editor reports to ITO Director.
Assistant Editor has two primary areas of responsibility: Editing and administrative/social media.
Assistant Editor performs editing (production edits, copy edits, proofing, and fact checking) on some articles and must maintain good relations with those authors.
Assistant Editor must be able to produce his/her own original content, written in an engaging, conversational, and interesting manner.
Assistant Editor is the last set of proofing eyes on content prior to posting.
Assistant Editor posts original and reprinted articles received from Editor on ITO website (WordPress).
Assistant Editor finds images available for use (typically creative commons) for each article.
Assistant Editor posts ITO articles, both new and from archives, on Facebook and Twitter with a consistent message and voice appropriate for ITO’s audience.
Assistant Editor manages the other various responsibilities for ITO’s social media: retweeting people who have tweeted ITO articles, monitoring and responding to messages, and tracking social media statistics.
Assistant Editor pays writers via PayPal when articles are published.
Assistant Editor monitors ITO site, deleting spam and otherwise inappropriate comments. ITO errs on the side of keeping comments unrestricted but deletes profanity, racialism, and obvious items.
Other duties as assigned.
