The associate editor plans, executes and assists the managing editor of Clemson World, the University's flagship magazine. The Associate Editor contributes content and content direction for University messaging in Clemson World and all its affiliated print, digital and social products. Assists colleagues with writing, editing and proofreading tasks; supervises freelancers, student interns and other editorial contributors to the magazine. The associate editor interacts with University leaders as needed to support strategic initiatives. Other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES:

30% - Essential - Editorial Management / Quality Assurance

Working with the editor, effectively leads production of Clemson World magazine, including determining content for 3 print editions/year plus affiliated digital and social products, plus story planning, writing, editing, proofreading and other tasks as needed. Collaborates with the editor to determine long-form and short-format content for all magazine sections. Contributes to the feature well with original, well-researched and finely crafted stories that reflect the character and brand of the University. Initiates new avenues of content creation and follows those through to completion.

30% - Essential - Alumni Content Manager

Lead editorial producer of original content for the alumni news section of Clemson World magazine, reporting to the managing editor to coordinate the efforts of others who provide content. Plans, researches, writes and edits the alumni news section of Clemson World, including alumni profiles, class notes, deaths, Travelers, When In, alumni club news, etc. Thought leader for types of content that engage the alumni base. Collaborates with campus communicators to determine alumni profiles that are engaging, inspiring and reflect the diversity of the Clemson Family. Provides editorial feedback to campus communicators and to editorial interns on creation of these profiles. Provides direction to and editorial oversight for junior copy editor on obits, class notes, and other short-format content management. Collaborates with art director on photography, design and production.

20% - Essential - Digital Communications Lead

Supports a digital strategy for Clemson World magazine that includes Facebook, Instagram and a monthly e-newsletter, with the goal of increasing alumni engagement in support of the strategic communication goals of the division. Collaborates with University Relations team members to coordinate social media messaging with other University accounts. Provides content for and collaborates with College and department-level social media managers across campus to amplify Clemson World's storytelling platform. Tracks and measures a variety of user data to assess and refine social media content/channels. Monitors best practices in higher education and industry in social media content creation and delivery. Determines contents and writes monthly email communications. Follows up with responses, tracking and analysis. Contributes research, editorial direction, and messaging for magazine projects in digital medium as well as video projects as needed for Clemson.World online magazine, including Wordpress uploads.

20% - Essential - Writer/Editor: Contributes writing, editing and digital support for Clemson.News blog as needed in coordination the storytelling team. Other writing and editing duties as assigned for print and affiliated communications, event coordination, promotions and sponsored or advertising content.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education - Bachelor's Degree

Work Experience: Experience related to the development and dissemination of informational material

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Education - First Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Writing, Communications or Related Field

Experience - 2+ years
