About the Role

In this exciting newly created role you will write, edit, and produce high-quality digital sport content that is timely, innovative, and distinctive. You will either be assigned or pitch story angles, research, write and produce news stories, features, explainers and live blogs linked to the biggest topics of the day, often to tight deadlines. You will also deliver digital-first, trusted and impactful journalism, with an audience-centred approach, and help produce stories from external and internal sources, including wires services.

The role will also involve:

Adopting a flexible, collaborative approach within the team and regularly contribute ideas to improve the ways the ABC presents sport content on its digital platforms.
Maintaining a solid understanding of current national and international sports events and issues, monitoring a wide range of media outlets/sources.
Pitching and generating stories that are relevant to Australians and reflect the cultural, geographic and socio-economic diversity of the country.
Actively engaging with under-served audiences (female, young, CALD and outer-suburban) to find and tell stories that are relevant to them.
Using analytics to improve content and reach and better serve the audience.

About You

We are seeking a passionate Sport Journalist with demonstrated thorough knowledge of Australian sports news as well as relevant tertiary qualifications or demonstrated equivalent skills, knowledge and experience in the field. You are a creative, engaging, and unique voice with proven writing experience and the ability to source and analyse information to meet deadlines. It is key that you have a demonstrated and ongoing interest in finding and telling digital stories for established and under-served audiences that reflect Australia’s diversity.

You will also have:

Accomplished journalistic skills and editorial judgment to identify stories that will appeal to a broad audience.
Accomplished experience in producing and publishing high-quality digital content using a creative approach. Experience in live blogging would be an advantage.
Well-developed understanding of online, social, and on-demand content platforms, and methods of content distribution and engagement.??
A solid understanding of the ABC News strategy, audience insights and data to inform commissioning and prioritise stories for platforms.
A proven ability to source and maintain contacts across the broader Australian community.
