BBC East Midlands Today is the region’s most watched evening news programmes. Our viewers expect an unrivalled service of local daily news and analysis of events. As part of a multimedia newsroom, you are expected to gather and share content not just for TV, but also for digital and radio platforms. Our Nottingham office is also one of the country’s four weather hubs providing live and pre-recorded forecasts across the morning, lunch and weekends for up to 12 radio stations and three TV regions East Midlands, West Midlands and North West.
In this unique role, you'll be expected to work flexibly across both news and weather wherever required. You must be prepared to work a variety of shifts including earlies, lates and weekends.
Are you the right candidate?
The ideal candidate would be an experienced Broadcast Journalism who understands the demands of a busy newsroom working to tight deadlines. You would ideally have some knowledge of weather presentation but given this is a niche area full training would be provided. You must be able to demonstrate you have the ability to learn new skills quickly.
You will ideally have previous experience of production and reporting with meticulous attention to detail.
You should have an impressive understanding of daily news/journalism in our patch.
You’ll know the sorts of stories and creative treatments that will interest and engage our audience.
You should be well organised, calm under pressure and be able to take the initiative
You must be able to think up creative and original treatments for stories and present ideas for original journalism. Experience of Quantel edit system and Final Cut would be beneficial.
The weather hub can be demanding and busy during which you will present numerous live forecasts every hour for up to 12 radio stations as well as pre-recorded and live television forecasts for 3 regions. Being well-organised and calm under pressure is essential. You should be able to demonstrate your ability to develop weather-related stories and ideas for our output.
You'll need excellent communication skills and you’ll be able to summarise a complicated weather story for the day in a clear and engaging way with the ability to change your style and tone to engage with the audience. Experience is preferable but full training will be given for the right candidate.
You must have a great on-screen presence that could be from your experience as an established presenter/broadcaster or as someone who shows an obvious talent.
