Job Introduction
The Money and Work Unit is part of Newsgathering which provides news reports, pictures, audio and text material to all BBC News programmes and services, both in the UK and internationally.
BBC business online produces news, features and video for a range of BBC output.
You will be a self-starter, brimming with original ideas on how to find and tell business stories using data. You will be eager to find ways to complement news stories, when appropriate, or to identify original stories that can be carried across BBC outlets. You will be able to delve beneath headline figures and then confidently and succinctly explain the fuller picture to our audiences as well as other colleagues from BBC News. You will be excited about developing the way that data is interpreted and presented online as well as on TV. You will be able to work closely and productively with journalists from money and work as well as other data journalists at the BBC, to achieve the very best data journalism.

Main Responsibilities
We are looking for an experienced and creative data journalist whose primary role will be to tell business stories and help explain them through the creation of charts for BBC online and TV.
You will be expected to come up with original ideas for how to treat stories and suggest and create charts to make our business stories distinctive and accessible for readers who do not have a business background.
Responsibilities:
• Generate ideas for business data stories and suggest how they might be developed and visualised.
• Explore those ideas using statistical tools – and present them to audiences from a non-statistical background.
• Report on and analyse data in a way that contributes to telling compelling business stories online.
• Collaborate with reporters, editors to bring those stories to publication.
• Develop a thorough understanding of the BBC Money and Work’s aims and the part this job plays in meeting them.
Are you the right Candidate?
Required experience:
Demonstrable business journalism knowledge and experience
Demonstrable knowledge of software used for data analysis including Excel, R and Flourishand the ability to create graphics and charts using them
Demonstrable understanding of statistics and statistical analysis
Demonstrable experience of cleaning, parsing and querying data
Demonstrable experience of finding news stories using data and of visualising data
Demonstrable experience of working to tight deadlines
Desirable experience:
A good knowledge of software used for data analysis including ideally Flourish, QGIS
Experience of gathering information from Freedom of Information requests
Track-record of bringing long-term journalistic projects to fruition
Familiarity with navigating the websites of the ONS, OECD and other data repositories
