The World Service’s new Global China Unit will produce digital-first, impactful content in English and Chinese about one of the most important stories of our time: China and its place in the world.
Through nuanced, original and in-depth multi-platform content, with a particular focus on written pieces, the unit will compellingly tell the ‘global China story’ in a way that resonates with both Chinese and international audiences.

Key Skills, Knowledge And Responsibilities
A track record of producing and delivering impactful content on China and its place in the world which demonstrates innovative approaches to digital storytelling.
Excellent English writing and editing skills, passionate about writing both short and long-form, colour pieces and deep dives.
Proficient in spoken and written Chinese, able to conduct interviews and in-depth open-source research in Chinese.
To have an accomplished presentation style for digital platforms, which reflects BBC values, engages viewers and will resonate with Chinese and international audiences.
Experience of reporting on China for TV, radio or other digital platforms.
Experience of writing for different audiences and platforms, sometimes from the field.
Demonstrated ability to regularly pitch creative, original story ideas and finding sources to bring those stories to life.
Outstanding knowledge of the ‘global China story’, of the global impact of Chinese policies, investment and growing influence across the world.
Expertise relating to Chinese society, politics, business, the environment, or another beat, and a good understanding of the Chinese media and social media landscape.
The ability to collaborate with teams across World Service Output and Content as well as explore potential collaboration with wider BBC News and other current affairs strands.
Work closely with the executive editor to ensure every aspect of the story is carefully planned to guarantee maximum productivity and that stories fall within budget.
Willingness to travel abroad, sometimes at short notice.
Desirable
Experience self-shooting, working on short videos or podcasts.
Experience publishing engaging long-form articles, including investigative journalism.
Strong knowledge of using open-source intelligence (OSINT) tools and techniques, applied in a Chinese-language context.
Proven ability running complex projects with sources and local journalists in difficult or hostile environments.
