Job Introduction

Transparency is an essential element in ensuring audiences feel they can trust the BBC's journalism. There has never been a more important time to ensure news consumers understand not just what we know, but how we know it – and BBC Verify is at the heart of this as we find new ways to share more of the important, thoughtful work that goes into verifying, fact checking and sourcing our journalism.

The newly created unit brings together the BBC's best analysts, fact-checkers, data specialists and designers from across domestic and global teams with expertise in data journalism, disinformation and the latest Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) and verification techniques.

The team's physical location above the newsroom combines a live broadcasting environment with an operational centre of excellence where we can take the audience through our investigative journey, showing at each step how we verify the information we report. The BBC Verify team is growing and will include a BBC Verify correspondent, a Policy and Fact Check correspondent and an AI correspondent. We are looking for a Senior Editor who can lead our creative vision and turbo charge our production.

The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC for different reasons and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants. Priority consideration means for those employees seeking redeployment their application will be considered alongside anyone else at risk of redundancy, prior to any individuals being considered who are not at risk.
Main Responsibilities

As the Creative Editor you will lead a team producing world class forensic journalism in a clear, distinctive and impactful way. You will lead the production hub and oversee daily editorial projects, develop pioneering ideas to showcase our transparency and ensure the work of BBC Verify travels right across the BBC.
Are you the right Candidate?

• Extensive experience of forensic and data-driven journalism, with significant experience of using the latest techniques and technology in OSINT and UGC verification. This must include a proven track record of producing this type of journalism for digital video, streaming and TV formats.
• A visual flair and a creativity that underpins everything you do.
• You will be able to demonstrate extensive experience of delivering innovative work that shows the audience how we know what we know.
• Significant experience of creating and producing a range of different formats, with demonstrable skills in digital video innovation and impact.
• You will be able to showcase experience of developing new ways of storytelling, with a proven ability to use open source journalism.
• A deep understanding of changing audience habits and the evolving media landscape, in relation to forensic and investigative journalism.
• An ability to manage diverse stakeholders, often operating under tight timescales and managing competing priorities.
• You will have experience of dealing with daily and long-term editorial demands.
• A detailed understanding of impartiality as well as the BBC's Editorial Guidelines and the law in relation to journalism.
