Global Health Reporter

New Posted 19 December 2023 | London, England, United Kingdom | Bureau of Investigative Journalism

The Bureau of Investigative Journalism is seeking a talented journalist to join our award-winning global health reporting team. We are looking for a creative and proactive reporter to make this beat their own and deliver major investigations, initially on a 12-month contract.

You will be a key member of a team dedicated to producing original, hard-hitting, cross-border investigations – and actively ensuring that these stories change the world for the better.

You will have extensive experience of either investigative journalism, health/science reporting or both. You must be able to demonstrate experience of original journalism. You will care about improving the quality of investigative journalism across the world and understand the importance of collaboration.

About TBIJ

TBIJ is the UK’s largest independent investigative journalism organisation. We exist to inform the public about the realities of power in today’s world. Our investigations expose systemic wrongs, challenge misinformation and spark change.

With no corporate or political agenda, we bring to light serious issues affecting individuals and communities in the UK and around the world. We work strategically and collaboratively to maximise the impact of our reporting and share our findings openly with local, national and international media outlets to reach as many people as possible.

About the team

TBIJ’s Global Health team has published groundbreaking investigations exposing cancer medicines that put children’s lives at risk, revealing the tactics of the global tobacco industry and getting inside the details of Covid-19 vaccines, contracts and treatments. We tell the stories that others have not or cannot. Our current focus areas include antimicrobial resistance, the health implications of climate change and equitable access to healthcare.

We work with freelancers and publications around the world to report collaboratively and get the inside take on some of the world’s most pressing and unjust health issues. Our award-winning stories have reached millions across the world through these partnerships, including online, in print, on TV and on radio.

We put real-world impact at the heart of our work. Having an impact producer embedded in our team means that our stories really do change the world. Our investigations into medical oxygen helped kick-start a change in access to this life-saving treatment across the world. Our work on substandard chemotherapy for children prompted the development of tests to help ensure the drugs are safe.

About the role

Working as a reporter you will be contributing to our journalistic output based on the needs of the Global Health project, as designated by its editor. The ideal candidate will have some experience in medical, health or science reporting – or be able to show a strong interest in the area – and will be able to demonstrate some experience of investigative or original, in-depth journalism.

You will be a good fit if you have:

A track-record of finding, reporting and writing compelling original stories, preferably in global health
At least three years of journalism experience, preferably in investigative or long-form journalism
Knowledge of global health issues and extensive, diverse contacts in the field
An understanding of media law and journalistic ethics
Diligence and attention to detail
An approach that encompasses team working and collaboration
A passion for accountability journalism

Additional desirable experience and skills for this role might include:

Broadcast and/or public speaking experience
Data journalism skills
Creativity and originality in storytelling

We envisage this as a full-time role, primarily based in our London office, but as TBIJ is committed to supporting people who require a more flexible approach to working this is open to discussion. TBIJ is committed to being an inclusive and diverse employer providing opportunities for all, where people can come to do their best work. We particularly encourage applications from individuals from communities or backgrounds that are currently underrepresented in the media industry.

You do not need to tick every box in this ad – we are committed to hiring people with potential. If you feel like you lack some specific experience but have the necessary drive and passion, please do not be deterred from applying or getting in touch with any questions.

Salary: £36,000-£38,000, dependent on experience.

Duration: An initial 12-month fixed term contract, with the possibility of extension.
