Business Insider is hiring a Science Fellow to join our News division to tell fascinating, informative, and agenda-setting stories about science for our core audience that’s primarily interested in business, tech, and innovation.

The Role & Team:

The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week.

As a science fellow, you should be interested in and comfortable covering a breadth of topics, including climate change, space, archeology, animals, human evolution, NASA, SpaceX, extreme weather, and much more.

You should be a self-starter who has a passion for finding and telling great stories. We value flexibility, creativity, accountability, and a diversity of ideas and opinions. We want someone who is excited about our mission to get better every day.

You could file breaking news, as well as explainers, visual features, news analysis, features, and investigations. You should be comfortable handing a mixture of stories, working on tight deadlines, pursuing ambitious reporting, and juggling multiple responsibilities at one time.

This role reports directly to the science editor and sits on the Science team in the News division. This role will be [add location/remote/in office].

Key Responsibilities:

Write a mix of articles, including short news posts, explainers, visual features, and deeply reported pieces, on daily and weekly deadlines
Pitch stories with Business Insider-style headlines that appeal to our core audience
Collaborate with other reporters across the News division to produce stories quickly and accurately
Take story assignments with gusto

The ideal candidate has:

Excellent news judgment
The expertise necessary to read and evaluate scientific studies, talk to experts, and translate complex scientific topics for Business Insider’s audience
A curiosity about the world around them to find stories wherever they look
Responsible organizational and communication skills
A passion for examining what’s resonating with our audience and ideating new angles based off data

Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:

A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
Familiarity with digital and social media
The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
Proofreading and copyediting skills
A love of Business Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun

Salary & Benefits:

Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
PTO and paid holidays
Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment
