Capital & Main, an award-winning investigative news organization based in Los Angeles, is seeking a dynamic editor to lead writers in creating journalism that exposes the causes of and explores solutions to inequality both in California and nationally. Capital & Main was founded nearly ten years ago as a news organization dedicated to covering inequality, and has since expanded to also focus on climate change.
We are an engaged, inquisitive and highly collaborative staff committed to telling stories about the most important issues of our time. Our newsroom provides an ideal environment for an experienced, team-oriented journalist who is eager to help shape and guide an evolving news organization.
We are looking for an editor with at least five years of experience in news, narrative and investigative journalism. The Inequality Editor will guide writers in producing both national and California stories that examine the structural causes and effects of inequality. This includes income and wealth disparities, the impact of race and identity-based biases and the ways our economic and political systems produce unequal outcomes in critical areas including health care, housing, education, criminal justice and governing.
The most important qualifications for this position are:
Proven ability to direct a wide range of news, narrative and investigative stories with a keen eye for both journalistic rigor and engaging storytelling
Ability to make complex story subjects clear to general readers
Highly skilled in working with and supporting both veteran and younger reporters
Ability to meet tight deadlines and balance a range of responsibilities
Knowledge of politics and public policy
Understanding of the significance of race and identity in driving inequality, with experience covering communities of color in the United States
Ability to conceive and tell stories in a way that both exposes problems and inspires solutions
Reporting to the editor-in-chief, the Inequality Editor also works closely with the managing editor, multimedia editor, staff writers and contributors as well as the publisher, fact-checkers and proof-readers. Stories are written both by staff reporters and freelance contributors.
The position is based in Los Angeles and offers a great opportunity to join a growing newsroom of passionate, talented journalists, but remote applicants may also be considered. Capital & Main offers competitive pay and outstanding benefits.
