The Assistant Editor role is a full-time freelance position on CBS Sports’ digital pro basketball desk that calls for working alongside other editors, a team of reporters, producers and our social media unit in order to create and publish vital content for our fans. The ideal candidate will be comfortable with a proactive approach toward publishing written news stories, have a knack for spotting trends and is adept at aggregating breaking news in a speedy manner – but not at the expense of accuracy. Being a basketball fan, along with possessing knowledge of the league, its players, the major storylines and some history of the sport is essential.

Night, weekend and certain holiday work will be required, and the ideal candidate will be able to collaborate with writers and other editors as well as work well independently. Solid writing, editing and communication skills are essential. A sense of humor will also come in handy. This position will not utilize a candidate’s video editing skillset, as those tasks are not handled by editors in this division.

The digital arm of CBS Sports has offices in Fort Lauderdale, Nashville and Stamford, CT, and the candidate would be able, but not required, to work out of any of those locations. Remote work is also an option.

Responsibilities:

Work a five-day, 40-hour week (employed through ProUnlimited) schedule that will require editing written stories during nights, weekends and holidays

One weekend day will be required year-round, and during select major events — i.e. trade deadline, playoffs, free agency — both weekend days could be required

Edit, and possibly assign, written stories in a fast-paced, highly competitive news environment

Monitor social media, podcasts competitors’ sites to aggregate or assign coverage, as required

Oversee and maintain the NBA and WNBA verticals

While pro basketball will be the primary responsibility, expect to also edit baseball content and a few stories from other sports, as needed

Maintain proficiency and knowledge for SEO

Can adhere to all of CBS Sports’ content standards as it applies to accuracy, appropriateness, style and tone

Qualifications:

Minimum of three year experience in editorial and content creation, any experience managing reporters and/or editors

Experience and comfort with working in a virtual digital newsroom

Must monitor all forms of media

Solid verbal and written communication skills

Sound news judgment, and the ability to uphold the standards of the CBS Sports brand

General knowledge of major NBA and WNBA players, storylines and events that would be most helpful to fans

Able to receive and grow from constructive criticism

Advanced Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English or a related field

Vision to identify or introduce original coverage plans

Can coordinate the work of multiple reporters and editors

Seeks to thrive in a competitive setting

Well-versed in NBA and WNBA issues that are most important to fans and players

Knowledge or expertise within fantasy basketball and sports gambling world

Hiring Salary Range: $65000 - 75000.
