THE OPPORTUNITY
Centerfield is looking for a freelance copy editor to join our content team. Your primary duties will include proofreading and editing articles and reviews of products and services. You will work primarily with the copy chief to deliver compelling, quality content to our readers. We are seeking a professional copy editor who will edit content for clarity and proper usage, is well-versed in AP style, and will ensure our content meets the needs of our readers and our sites. Familiarity with SEO would be helpful.
In this role, you will:
Proofread, copy edit, and occasionally fact-check content for mechanics, clarity, organization, and readability
Work with copy chief to ensure articles and reviews align with company goals
Ensure content complies with AP style and our in-house style guides
Manage multiple assignments while meeting rigid deadlines in a fast-paced environment
You have:
A bachelor's degree, preferably in English, marketing, or journalism
An expert command of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and syntax in addition to strong writing skills
Proficiency in AP style and an excellent memory for stylistic rules and guidelines
Excellent planning and organization skills
Superb attention to detail to ensure error-free work
Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate effectively with others individually and in a group environment
The ability to work well under pressure, adjusting to multiple demands and shifting priorities while adhering to tight deadlines
A natural ability to identify discrepancies and/or issues in written content, and to resolve them with the copy chief and other editors while providing constructive feedback
Proficiency in G Suite (Google Workspace)
A knack for applying grammar/style rules effectively in context; a good balance of prescriptive and descriptive editing styles
The capability to troubleshoot complex problems
Four or more years of professional copy editing experience
Experience in editing or writing marketing, SEO, and/or online content
The ability to work independently

You may be asked to submit samples of your copy editing work. There is an editing test for qualified candidates. Note: This is a remote position. While weekly hours will vary depending on business needs, generally speaking, the copy editor will need to have the capacity to work up to at least 30 hours on a given week, if necessary. They should also be available to work primarily during normal Pacific Standard Time business hours (8 a.m.-5 p.m.).
Pay rate is $30-$35, based on skills and experience.
