The Chattanooga Times Free Press is looking for a creative and forward-thinking general assignment reporter for its local news staff. We’re a newspaper with a larger news team than in most markets our size. We have a strong beat system, including education, religion, health, government, politics and other topics, but stories still come up that need a generalist. We’re looking for someone with a curious mind who’s a quick study and can tackle several such stories a week, helping us find new stories or revisit old stories in new ways – or helping on someone else’s beat in our thriving news town. The job requires a strong work ethic, a team mindset and lots of creativity. You should be able to work collaboratively across beats and disciplines. You must be able to handle data, spot trends, stay on top of daily news and hold the powerful to account with enterprise and investigative coverage. You must be driven to tell stories in new ways across many platforms. At least two years of experience at a daily or community news outlet is preferred. The Times Free Press is part of a financially solid, privately owned media company with a newsroom that values mission-driven journalism and community service. The newspaper has been named the best in the state by the Tennessee Press Association for seven of the past eight years and has been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize three times since 2013.
