The Chicago Tribune is seeking an experienced editor to assign and edit stories and supervise reporters covering education and other local beats. We're looking for a team leader who will set high standards and who understands how to help reporters reach them, melding journalistic and managerial skills.
What you will do:
Work with reporters and other editors to set coverage priorities -- a mix of breaking news, enterprise and watchdog stories
Lead our coverage of the most important Chicago Public Schools, suburban and state education news stories
Help reporters dig for the less obvious and for more impactful storytelling
Help reporters deliver clean, clear, accurate, and fair stories, ranging from quick posts online to deep dives
Applicants should be prepared for some night and weekend work
What you will bring:
In-depth education reporting or editing experience
A familiarity with Chicago and Illinois issues
A desire to critically examine how well the Chicago Public Schools, suburban districts, and the state are educating their students and serving their diverse populations
Strong news judgment, solid grammar and style awareness, curiosity, and rigorous editing standards
A focus on high energy, teamwork, empathy, a reader focus, and a strong ethical foundation
Candidates who have a track record of strong beat reporting or editing in other subjects and geographic areas for a daily news operation may also be considered
