Who We're Looking For - Managing Editor
As the Managing Editor you will lead a team of writers and editors while defining and executing the overall editorial vision for our brand. In the day-to-day you’ll work closely with the Brand Director, Director of Editorial Strategy, UX Specialist, SEO Specialist, and, of course, your team of writers and editors. The person in this role is primarily responsible for leading the site’s content strategy and production in ways that grow our site traffic and drive revenue and business goals.
The Impact You Will Make
Lead and motivate a team of writers, editors, and freelancers to create content that readers easily recognize as best in class.
Develop, coordinate and execute an organic content strategy (including syndicated news, social, email, search, and video)
Create and execute editorial strategy to drive our business goals.
Set standards in methodology, research, content quality, and publishing processes.
Use data to guide strategies and decision making.
Co-own developing partnerships with advertisers, press, and other publishing sites w/ Digital PR Specialists.
Review, edit, and proofread content to maintain quality standards and consistency across the site.
Responsible for organic traffic growth
Responsible for owned audience acquisition, retention and growth
Co-own organic editorial strategy through to bottom-line revenue w/ Brand Director
Co-own growth opportunities, budgeting, and forecasting based on content performance and reporting w/ Brand Director
Ability to articulate and implement a clear editorial vision and an understanding of how to stand out from competitors
Create long term content plans, monthly content schedules, and assignments for writers.
Provide performance feedback and reviews to direct reports through regular 1:1 coaching and mentorship.
Establish standards in methodology, research, and content publishing, and support senior editors in implementing that strategy
Report on content production and performance, giving insight and transparency into the financial impact of editorial projects. Provide weekly/monthly briefings that give visibility to the brand team and executive leadership on content performance.
Established expertise in journalism/digital media, with a strong editing portfolio of consumer-focused content
Partner with cross-functional leaders (e.g., SEO, UX, design, etc.) to identify and implement best practices to make our content perform better.
Provide monthly reporting to executive leadership that brings clarity and accountability to what is working, what is not working, and what our biggest opportunities are
What You Need
Established expertise in journalism, digital media, or digital marketing, with a strong portfolio of consumer-focused content
Demonstrated skill helping others write clear, concise, compelling content
Experience managing a team of writers, editors, and/or freelance contributors
Ability to articulate and implement a clear editorial vision for the site and an understanding of how to stand out from competitors
Ability to interpret traffic, UX, and financial performance data and apply it to content strategy
Ability to edit quickly and efficiently while maintaining high content quality
Experience delivering feedback to writers and editors through both written comments and face-to-face interactions
Strong understanding of CMS (we use a version of WordPress, so experience there is a plus)
Solid understanding of creating and distributing editorial content for SEO, social, email, and PPC and how they interact with editorial content
Solid understanding of Google Analytics, Data Studio, and other reporting tools and how to report on content performance at the site and page level
Strong understanding of CMS (such as WordPress)
Experience using cloud collaboration apps like AirTable
Other Considerations
3+ years management/supervisory experience
8+ years in journalism, advertising, online marketing, media, news, or publishing with at least 5+ years writing or editing
