Consumers' Checkbook is a nonprofit, Consumer Reports-type publication and website that evaluates, and advises consumers on how to deal with, local consumer service companies and professionals-auto repair shops, retailers, healthcare professionals, home contractors, veterinarians, insurers, and many other types of services. We also advise consumers on how to save money and avoid scams and other pitfalls.

We are seeking an experienced and hardworking writer and editor. This is a senior-level position. Candidates should be highly resourceful, thorough, detail-oriented, and motivated to join our team as a leader and solid contributor to our casual but busy work environment.

Most of our staff work a hybrid schedule, working remotely two days per week and three days a week in our downtown Washington, D.C. offices, located near the Farragut North and Farragut West Metro stations. We will consider remote-only applicants for this position but prefer those who can work a hybrid schedule. For remote-only applicants, our organization can offer employment only to those living in the following U.S. states: DC, FL, GA, IL, MD, MT, NJ, NC, PA, SC, and VA.

Responsibilities include:

Generate original ideas for new content.
Manage day-to-day editorial activities.
Recruit, manage, and edit freelancers.
Author original stories.
Coordinate with marketing and production staff.
Update and revise existing articles.
Work with research staff to discover data sources and implement methodologies to compare quality and prices offered by service providers.
Represent the organization at events and in media interviews.
Other duties as assigned.

The qualifications we're looking for are:

Strong background in writing and editing for consumer audience.
Interpersonal skills with ability to manage our editorial team and collaborate with other staff.
Commitment to accuracy.
Curious and open to new ideas.
Understanding of technology and the current consumer landscape and how it is evolving.
Critical thinking skills and skepticism. Ability to dissect businesses' increasingly sophisticated marketing schemes and determine how they might impact consumers.
Commitment to our mission of educating and advocating for consumers.
Prefer candidates with bachelor's degree or master's degree in related fields (journalism, writing, communication, education), but applicants with degrees in other disciplines also qualify if they possess several years of relevant experience.
At least eight years' experience writing consumer-interest articles, plus experience managing and editing other writers.
