The Deputy Editorial Director helps the department ensure that a growing amount of editorial content meets the organization’s high standards for accuracy, credibility, fairness, and timeliness. This position oversees the editing of daily news and research and works closely with the Editorial Director to guide CPJ’s long-term editorial strategy. This position manages editorial staff and deputizes for the Editorial Director. They collaborate with other department heads to advance CPJ’s mission.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Managing day-to-day and longer-term copy flow, including assigning editors to stories; commissioning copy for use on the website.
In consultation with the editorial director, oversee ongoing and annual research such as CPJ’s lists of journalists killed and imprisoned for their work
In consultation with the editorial director, guide CPJ’s long-term editorial strategy
Identify trends in press freedom and suggest complementary features or other related coverage
As needed, edit long-term investigative or analytical special reports
Oversee aspects of web and print production and relationships with web development firms and database managers
Oversee relationships with external writers or editors and other vendors and contractors
Deputize for the editorial director
