Department Description: The Office of University Communications is responsible for the strategic management of the University’s overall public relations and reputation management activities. The department provides leadership, counsel and services to over 200 communicators across campus and works with those communicators to ensure a unified campus-wide communications strategy. Areas within University Communications include: Executive Communications, Media Relations, Internal Communications, Content Development, Social Media, Marketing Communications, Strategic Resources, Issues Management, Community Relations, Public Records, the UNC-Chapel Hill Visitor’s Center, and UNC Creative.

Position Description: The Director of Content Development exercises significant authority to develop and implement campus-wide strategic communications content in support of UNC-Chapel Hill’s brand strategy. The Director serves as one of the lead contacts for communications professionals across the UNC campus and provides counsel to leaders in the various schools and units. He/she has a masterful command of content creation as well as the ability to use holistic, integrated thinking to create, approve, and execute strategies for telling the University’s story across all University-owned, non-paid platforms. In this role, the Director will exercise independent authority as a content specialist and mentor to members of multiple content teams – writers, social media and web coordinators, and internal communications specialists – who create University-level content and digital media projects. In addition, this position will approve and implement systems for project management, efficient workflows, and managing short, often variable deadlines and priorities. The Director is responsible for exhibiting substantial authority to approve and implement strategy appropriately in supporting the goal of engaging key audiences with a dynamic presence and a unified, University-aligned focus.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: The Director of Content Development will be an experienced communications professional with a strong background in producing compelling content. He/she will also have strong communications skills and the ability to develop and maintain positive relationships across campus to best position the University according to its strategic goals. Finally, the Director will have the ability to lead a team of content producers to and to manage project workflow in a way that meets deadlines and produces content of the highest quality.
Education Requirements: Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience; for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution.
Qualifications and Experience: * A master’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism, public affairs, or a related field is preferred. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree and three additional years of relevant experience will be considered.
* A minimum of 7-10 years in roles related to content development and public relations.
* Experience with strategic decision-making and staff management and development
* A familiarity with university communication strategies and delivery
* Ability to develop a strong network on colleagues throughout the university and collaborate in a collegial manner
* Exceptional written and oral communication skills
