Director of Media Relations

New Posted 20 November 2023 | New York, NY | The New York Public Library

The Communications & Marketing Department is responsible for advancing the Library’s mission and priorities through the promotion of its services, resources, locations, collections, programs, events, and exhibitions to a broad array of audiences and communities, both external and internal. Leveraging both print and digital platforms and channels, the Department positions the Library as a cultural and educational leader and seeks to attract and engage new audiences across New York City and around the world.

The Director for Public Relations (PR) develops creative, proactive press strategies to promote NYPL priorities and makes sure these strategies are properly executed. Additionally, the Director is responsible for overseeing incoming press requests. It is a fast-paced environment that involves every aspect of PR, from long-term planning for Library campaigns and initiatives to quickly turning around breaking news and crisis comms requests – sometimes all in the same day. Although there is a team of publicists who will report to the Director, because of the nature and volume of requests that the Library receives, the Director should be ready and willing to pitch reporters and handle incoming requests when the need arises.
