Reporting to the editor and features director, the successful candidate will lead the lifestyle desk in creating and implementing the day’s schedule, setting the tone and unique approach for series and exclusives.
The lifestyle editor will have an eye for a story and be ‘in the know’ about what people are talking about before it starts trending.
With a passion for digital culture, dating and relationships, workplace psychology and the latest trends, the lifestyle editor will be the go-to on the ever-changing zeitgeist.
They will also oversee the production of everyday must-read content that falls under the lifestyle genre, such as travel, property, real life, parenting, food, health & fitness and money, and be able to work efficiently with agency copy.
The role will require the right candidate to balance the creation of original ideas and angles with strong, quick coverage of the most important stories for the Metro.co.uk audience with long-term projects and series.
They will care deeply about topics we champion such as diversity, wellbeing and identity and will know how to navigate these areas with the sensitivity they require.
The experienced editor will be as passionate about meticulous copy as they are about nurturing an ambitious team, while also being a strong troubleshooter with a talent for seeking out solutions.
The role includes
Leading the news agenda with the most on-brand stories by monitoring daily breaking news, online discussions and trends
Managing a busy team of talented reporters and steering the desk’s direction to support quality content and growth, while prioritising workloads on a day-to-day basis within an ever-changing story landscape
Commissioning, responding to pitches, troubleshooting, managing and editing the lifestyle team’s content while working closely on original feature ideas with the team and features director
Writing and publishing your own content
Spotting areas of potential, pitching and leading on projects, series, and campaigns
Clear and creative management of staff writers and freelancers
Working closely with the print team to create content that works for both print and online, including maintaining a robust forward-planning schedule
Working with SEO, audience and social teams to maximise impact and reach
Collaborating with the social and audience teams to grow our audience across platforms, including Google Discover, Apple News and all social media
Using analytics platforms and daily data to drive traffic and build loyalty and pairing it with in-depth knowledge of the Metro brand to inform decisions
Liaising with commercial team and partnerships editor on client briefs
Identifying new business opportunities, looking for imaginative ways to monetise new content genres and presenting ideas to the commercial team
Podcast and video experience a bonus
Understanding of legal covenants such as the UK Editors’ Code of Practice, media law, copyright law and editorial guidelines in the UK and globally
