To honour the memory of Simon Greenberg, a former Mail on Sunday reporter, who died aged 52 in 2021, a new bursary and scholarship programme is being established with the support of DMGT to identify and develop an exciting new generation of sports news journalists.
Who is the bursary for?
The scheme would look to help those from diverse and less advantaged backgrounds who might otherwise not be able to afford to pay for post graduate journalism training. Successful candidates will need to demonstrate a passion and understanding of sport (especially football) across multi platforms and be able to explain what they read/watch/listen to. It can be newspapers, websites, podcasts, video – or all of them. It would be advantageous if they are across Mail Sport’s products – the sports pages of the newspaper, the social channels, the podcasts, the website.
How will the scheme work?
Working in conjunction with the long standing National Council for the Training of Journalists’ (NCTJ) Journalism Diversity Fund (JDF), one successful applicant will be selected to enter the programme. The chosen candidate will be given the opportunity to study an NCTJ approved postgraduate training course with their fees and living expenses covered by a specially created bursary. It is envisaged that their training will include work experience on the sports desks of our titles.
About the successful candidate?
We are looking for someone who has a passion for sport and an interest in learning what it takes to be a successful sports journalist. Ideally you will have basic social and video editing skills and someone who is ambitious, has a hunger for success and naturally inquisitive.
What happens at the end of the training?
On the successful completion of the student’s training, they will be offered a 12 month fixed term contract with DMGT which would include rotations through the sports departments of DMGT’s titles.
