New Posted 8 February 2024 | Dexter, Missouri | Dexter Statesman

The Statesman in Dexter, Missouri, is searching for someone to fill an important role at the newspaper and within the community. The newspaper has an opening for a news editor/sports editor combination role.

The Statesman is a weekly publication that services Dexter and Stoddard County. It has a reputation of being the go-to place for news with its website and Wednesday print edition.

The news editor/sports editor is responsible for all content and will also help paginate the news and sports pages. The newspaper has one other full-time employee who handles all other office duties, including classifieds, helping customers in person and on the phone, and helping with paginating of the paper as needed. The paper also has a parttime advertising sales rep.

The newspaper is part of Butler County Publishing, owned by Rust Communications in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Dexter has sister papers in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, and Doniphan, Missouri, and other Rust publications in Sikeston and Kennett, Missouri. The Statesman regularly uses stories from those other publications to help supplement the print edition.

The news editor/sports editor has three stringers in place to help with news and sports coverage and is encouraged to cultivate more. It will be imperative for our new employee to use stringers to help navigate everything that needs covered.

This position is salary, and the starting pay is based on the fact that this is a combination role of news and sports. We are willing to train the right candidate, including recent college graduates.

We offer the standard full-time benefits, including medical, vision and dental insurance, 401K, and free life insurance. We also offer flexible work schedules and an opportunity to become part of a growing community.

Dexter is a growing community in Southeast Missouri and is an easy 2 hour and 30 minute drive to St. Louis, Missouri and Memphis, Tennessee.

To apply for the position, email a cover letter and resume, along with examples of your work, to publisher Chris Pruett at cpruett@darnews.com.
