NewsNow is a rare UK-based .com success story: a news organisation using technology to support and promote credible, independent and public interest journalism, via the extremely successful news aggregation and discovery platform NewsNow.co.uk.
Founded in 1997 to democratise and disrupt the market for news, NewsNow has since become a global top 50 news website with millions of loyal users who discover news from thousands of publishers.
We're now looking for a fully remote Editor, with strong tech skills and good editorial judgement to lead up our seven-strong editorial team and oversee our coverage from current affairs to sport.
This isn't your average editorial role — you'll be shaping how millions of people discover news, opinion and analysis from thousands of publishers, with issues like media plurality, source credibility and systemic bias in mind.
The right candidate will:
Have a background in journalism and 3 or more years' experience in editorial management roles that involved significant analysis and content development
Have a passion for our mission to support and promote credible, independent and public interest journalism
Be expert in, and passionate about, hard news and current affairs
Have a broad familiarity with popular news interests across sports, entertainment, money, culture etc
Be confident about helping to shape our editorial stance and the content we feature on the site, with a good and up-to-date grasp of media law
Have a keen awareness of issues relating to bias in the media, such as how ownership, revenue sources, regulation and systemic bias can affect the output of publications, particularly those that represent the mainstream in the UK and US
Have excellent people-management and communication skills, capable of clear and efficient communication via messaging and calls
Be comfortable writing in a range of styles from comment pieces to documentation of processes, plans and decisions
Have a highly organised, diligent and analytical approach to work, able to translate high level concepts into concrete workflow processes
Be confident in managing a team in a 100% remote working environment
Your responsibilities
Reporting directly to NewsNow's CEO, you will:
Take overall responsibility for the aggregated/curated content that appears on the NewsNow site and its performance across all our editions (in the UK, US, Canada, Nigeria and elsewhere)
Be responsible for the management of our experienced team of fully-remote editorial staff, including giving training and overseeing appraisals and HR
Prioritise the work of the team across editorial beats and international editions covering domestic and world news, sport, business, industry sectors, technology, entertainment, lifestyle, and science
Maintain and share an understanding of the important news stories rolling out daily and their wider context and history
Keep abreast of relevant legal, regulatory, political and technological developments
Support and motivate the team and develop a shared understanding of our editorial voice, values and vision
Be responsible for the implementation of NewsNow's mission as it applies to the editorial team; ensuring it is embodied in our content offering; training and educating the team on issues impacting the news media
Promote the use of best practice in processes and tools across the team, including continuously developing and documenting the internal tools we use
Oversee and develop the use of media literacy/context tools offering users publisher information and rankings and topic explainers and backgrounders
Work with the Publisher Relations Manager to develop and uphold our editorial standards and communicate those standards to staff, publishers and users
Write content as needed for blog posts, social media and newsletters
