Austin Free Press is a non-profit media start-up dedicated to providing in-depth reporting on the critical issues facing Austin. We are a digital-first, multimedia, modern platform with no paywall because everyone deserves access to high-integrity, high-quality journalism. Our mission is to empower Austinites to make informed decisions through independent/non-partisan reporting, diverse opinions, and civil dialogue. Our work is driven by the belief that a strong local press is essential for a healthy community and functioning democracy.

We are committed to investigating the issues that matter most to the Austin community, from the Silicon Hills and population growth to the affordability crisis, homelessness and poverty, environmental sustainability, political misconduct, declining and displaced communities of color, and lifespan disparities. We aim to engage the community, seeking out underrepresented voices, to understand challenges and devise solutions for all Austinites to thrive. We also intend to highlight the positive happenings in Austin to provide balanced coverage rather than sensational or agenda-driven clickbait.

About You:

We are seeking a dynamic and visionary Founding Editor to spearhead our mission at Austin Free Press. As the driving force behind our editorial endeavors, you will play a pivotal role in defining and executing our organization’s direction. Your entrepreneurial spirit will be crucial in assembling and inspiring a team of dedicated journalists. You will be at the helm, steering the creation of compelling and impactful content that not only informs and engages but also inspires the Austin community.

Specific responsibilities include:

Develop and implement a content strategy that aligns with our mission, meets the needs of our readers, and addresses the most pressing issues facing Austin

Recruit, hire, and manage a talented team of writers, editors, and freelancers, who share our values and are passionate about covering Austin's complex issues

Edit and proofread all content with a meticulous eye to ensure it is accurate, fair, and of the highest quality before being published

Collaborate with our marketing team to develop and execute strategies to promote our journalism to the Austin community

Represent our organization publicly as a key face at events and by engaging with readers, community leaders, and other stakeholders

Ensure adherence to journalistic ethics and high editorial standards

Wear many hats as a team player on a small team, adept at prioritizing and multitasking, and willing to pitch in where needed

Qualifications

Minimum of 5 years of experience as an editor and leader

Proven track record of producing high-quality content with a commitment to accuracy, fairness, and journalistic excellence

Strong editing and proofreading skills with a keen eye for detail, accuracy, and message

Excellent writing and communication skills

Passion for journalism and commitment to public service

Entrepreneurial spirit, comfort with ambiguity and the ability to innovate

Committed to reporting that is inclusive and reflective of all communities, particularly those historically underrepresented in mainstream media

Curiosity and intellectual humility

Desire to lead, coach and serve the organization, the employees, and the readers

Demonstrated proficiency in digital storytelling (video, text, audio)

Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, or a related field is encouraged

Knowledge of WordPress is a plus
