Freelance News Writer

Acceleramota LLC is seeking a highly motivated and skilled news writer to join our nascent editorial arm on an on-call basis. Join the burgeoning automotive media startup CarGurus ranked among its top 10 publishing partners!

You MUST be available in the U.S. and available to write stories within 2-3 hours of assignment. Ideally, we're looking for someone available during regular working hours (around 9 AM - 5 PM Eastern and/or Pacific Time). We have staff on the East Coast and West Coast overseeing editorial workflow, so your assigning editor will be subject to availability.

Writers chosen for this role will be added as a member of our Slack workspace, where suggested topics will be posted daily. News topics are then assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. On days when topics are not suggested by an editor, strategically devised pitches will be accepted. The minimum rate per story is $50 for 300 - 500 words and scales upward according to the word count and amount of original reporting involved.

Key Responsibilities:

Be readily available during designated on-call hours to take on writing assignments as they arise.
Stay up-to-date with the latest trends in the automotive sector, with a strong focus on battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and technological advancements to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
Deliver quick, accurate reporting that is well-researched, fact-checked, and engaging.
Incorporate personal insights in your work to craft uniquely human stories, irreplicable by AI.
Be prepared to occasionally write other types of content in addition to news, including listicles, SEO-rich buying guides, and in-depth informational hubs on specific car models.

Compensation:

News stories, article updates, and contributions to co-bylined articles are $50 up to 500 words and scale upward according to the scope of the assignment.
Longer content pieces, such as listicles and hubs, start at $200 for 1,000 words, with the possibility of increased pay commensurate with word count.
A $200 stipend is offered to qualified applicants who successfully complete a 4-hour timed writing test designed to assess the candidate's aptitude to produce high-quality content delivered in a timely manner.

Qualifications:

Extensive knowledge of the car industry, particularly in BEVs, PHEVs, and automotive technology.
Proven ability to promptly write informative, engaging, and well-sourced content.
Adept at incorporating personal experience and a distinct voice into writing.
Ability to work effectively within tight deadlines and adapt to spontaneous writing assignments.
Experience in SEO, Adobe PhotoShop, and a basic understanding of affiliate marketing is preferred.
