Freelance NJ News and Culture Writers

New Posted 7 November 2022 | Anywhere, New Jersey | NJ Indy

NJ Indy is a print and digital alternative news and culture publication, covering news, arts, music, culture, food/drink, outdoors and more in New Jersey. We've been publishing online since last summer, and just distributed our first monthly, free print edition throughout NJ this month. Now, we're looking to add unique voices to our freelance team. We publish profiles about NJ creators (or those visiting the state), news and culture stories on important or interesting local trends, and stories on things folks ought to check out—restaurants, breweries, hiking trails, etc. Take a peek around our website, or find a print issue, and get a sense for the types of stories we cover. We like writers that have a voice but have done the requisite research and outreach to report with authority. We like interesting stories told in interesting ways. We have no recommended word count; write the story to the length it needs to be. Write in the first-person if you want, be liberal with curse words (also, if you want); simply, write to be understood and to engage our young audience. We'll help ya smooth it all out. We pay per story, not enough as we're still in this start-up phase—about $70-$100 depending on the story. But we'll keep giving you assignments, and, hopefully, we'll help you grow as a writer. Indeed, don't worry if you don't have a ton of clips or a J school background (though, surely mention that if you do), we just want curious, local folks who care about their communities, are passionate about the stories on which they report and are cool to work with. If interested, send Publisher Matt Cortina an email at matt@njindy.com, and mention any relevant prior work or studies, and maybe a few story pitches—or, at least, topics/people/groups/trends you'd like to explore more. We look forward to hearing from ya.
