The FT is looking for a journalist to join a small team in India and cover one of the busiest and most challenging beats in our foreign network: Indian business, finance, and billionaires. The correspondent will be based in India’s financial and corporate hub, Mumbai.
The Mumbai correspondent will lead the coverage of India’s biggest conglomerates - mostly family-owned businesses known for their ambitious bets, domestic clout, growing international footprint, and often bitter personal rivalries.
The successful candidate must also be ready to write about the financial service industry, technology, startups, manufacturing, and the expansion of multinational business in a country that is drawing unprecedented attention as a potential “China plus one” country at a time when companies are diversifying their supply chains. India’s big companies and richest people have an ever larger international footprint, giving many opportunities to collaborate with other FT reporters around the world.
Our correspondent will have solid news judgement and the ability to sift through a heavy news load to deliver original reporting takes and analyses, news scoops, and standout coverage of running business stories.
India has a vibrant media scene, and the Mumbai beat is a competitive one, requiring a sharp eye and a tireless ability to cultivate new contacts. The job will also allow opportunities to travel to Bangalore and India’s other tech and business hubs. As part of the FT’s India team, we will also call on the correspondent to fill in as needed on other India stories, including in politics, geopolitics, and political economy. FT readers and editors are keenly interested in India, and there is ample scope too to contribute reports and features on life, culture, and society in the world’s most populous country for the FT’s different verticals, including FT Weekend, videos, podcasts, and the Comment desk.
Key Responsibilities:
Write breaking news stories
Interview key business and industry leaders, executives and analysts, to develop exclusive scoops and insights on trends in business and markets
Write in depth analysis for all sections, including World, Companies, Markets, and Technology when appropriate
Be prepared to appear in video productions and podcast interviews
Engage with readers across social media platforms
Demonstrate an interest in reporting across all digital platforms
Who we are looking for
Hard-working, energetic, self-starting, enterprising and prolific journalist, with experience reporting on business, financial and economic issues.
A multi-tasker, who can juggle the demands of a news desk hungry for scoops and news stories, quickly turn around breaking news stories, while producing a steady flow of more in-depth analytical pieces
Able to write with clarity, accuracy, and flair, explaining complex issues, and bringing to life the colourful characters behind India’s biggest companies
Comfortable collaborating closely with colleagues in New Delhi to cover India, or even the countries beyond when needed
Please submit your application by end of day Thursday 19th October 2023
