Gizmodo is looking for an experienced Editor to oversee Gizmodo’s Consumer Tech coverage.
As a major part of your role, you’ll run Gizmodo’s reviews and product coverage and will oversee a team of reporters and reviewers, assign them stories and reviews, guide their reporting, edit their copy, and work with other editors to publish fast, accurate, and insightful journalism. You’ll be providing Gizmodo’s large audience with valuable insight and opinions about consumer technology products, what to buy, and how to best use it.
The ideal candidate for this position has a broad understanding of the consumer technology space, and experience as both an editor and a reporter covering the industry. They have great contacts at major companies, especially hardware manufacturers, and are respected for their fair and insightful coverage. They are equally comfortable working on an in-depth hands-on product review, a breaking news announcement, or broad coverage of a major event like CES. They should also be comfortable with major benchmarking software, hands-on product testing and creating Best Lists and Buyers Guides.
You should apply if you know what’s important and what’s just hype; you can recommend sources and help young reporters grow; and you’re used to the fast pace of covering news online and know the importance of being first, but can also provide depth and accuracy. You have a reader-first POV, you know what makes a great story for Gizmodo, and you can guide our coverage with confidence and insight.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Serve as the lead newsroom voice on consumer tech editorial choices
Strategize and execute and ambitious slate of best products lists and buyers guides across different categories
Represent the interests of our journalism and our audiences in broader interactions across the company
Juggle a vibrant daily newsroom’s many needs with ambitious, long-term projects
Attract, manage and retain editorial talent
Oversee organizational, management, and newsroom-wide mentoring tasks
Partner with the leadership team to help create and drive strategy to grow G/O Media’s reach
Requirements
Minimum 3-5 years experience reporting and editing consumer technology stories at a major print or digital publication
Experience managing reviewers or writing consumer tech reviews, as well as producing buyers guide and advice content
A strong understanding of the major companies, issues, and reader-focused concerns across the consumer technology world
Experience identifying breaking news stories and planning smart features
Sharp editing skills, excellent grammar, and a strong sense of voice and style
Knowledge of journalistic standards, laws, and best reporting practices
This position reports into the Editor in Chief.
This is a position covered under the collective bargaining agreement with the WGA-E at a minimum of $98,000.00 with a range of up to $105,000.00 annually, dependent upon years of related experience.
