Education Next: A Journal of Opinion and Research (EdNext) is a quarterly journal focused on K–12 education reform and located at Harvard Kennedy School as part of the Program for Education Policy and Governance. The Managing Editor is responsible for keeping the journal’s publication of content in research, policy, and opinion moving forward. Prior to the print publication of each issue, articles are released on the journal's website www.educationnext.org, which publishes additional content including web-only articles, interactive graphics, podcasts, and videos. This position reports to the editor-in-chief of EdNext.
Position Description
Meets weekly with the editor-in-chief to discuss and plan content and staffing. Review the status of articles in progress, brainstorm potential contributors, and designate tasks for the solicitation and management of journal content. Between meetings, follow up on action items.
Coordinates and oversees the efforts of the journal's web editor, two manuscript editors, and a design director.
Collaborates with that team on the editing and design of each issue.
Produces an annual schedule for editorial and production and supports the editor-in-chief, executive editors, and other members of the editorial, web, and production teams in staying on schedule.
Assigns articles to manuscript editors and collaborates with them on tracking editorial feedback to be addressed in editing; addresses points of contention arising with manuscripts or proofs; identifies titles, subtitles, and callouts for articles; facilitates author communications as needed.
Provides general copy-editing and proofreading support during the proofing process; maintains the clarity and accuracy of figures; cross checks proofs against original content and lists of proofs corrections to check for errors. Schedules, sets the agenda for, and produces notes from a quarterly team art meeting.
Collaborates with the design director on shaping artwork and photographs for each article, using art meeting notes. Manages development of figures for each article. Examines printer's proofs of each full issue.
Manages editorial calendar, sketching out the issues in the upcoming year and prepares agenda for monthly conference calls that convene the executive editorial board to discuss forthcoming issues.
Prepares notes from monthly conference calls and distributes.
Monitors editors' email listserv, where editorial decisions are made in between conference calls; maintains the next monthly call agenda as a living document, updating as needed based on email exchanges.
Uses agendas and notes as a road map to facilitate work of executive editorial team, ensuring commissioned work is delivered on schedule and upcoming issues take shape according to the editors' vision.
Supervises communications consultant and web editor. Assigns and reviews work, providing edits to products as needed.
Conducts check-ins to discuss progress with assignments and plan for upcoming projects; conducts annual performance reviews.
Keeps contracts with consultants current and manages the process of replacing employees and contractors. Manages contracts of contributors to EdNext by negotiating fees, drafting agreements, obtaining contributors’ signatures, and maintaining records.
Manages advertising for EdNext by coordinating with paid and trade advertisers; coordinates with the communications consultant in the solicitation of advertising; keep advertising rate card updated; send and receive insertion orders from advertisers, coordinate payments, and direct advertising revenue to an undesignated fund at FAS.
Manages subscriptions to the print journal by maintaining subscriber lists, sending renewal reminders, tracking payments, and directing subscription revenue to an undesignated fund at FAS.
Serves as liaison with printer, manager of the mailing list, publisher, and mailing house to get issues printed and distributed to subscribers.
Creates weekly payment memo for the payment of web-only contributors and quarterly payment memo for the payment of print contributors.
Participates in the planning and execution of PEPG and EdNext special events: conferences, colloquium series, academic visitors; writes invitations to speakers and panelists and drafts agenda; collaborates with communications consultant on promoting the event; works with PEPG associate director on various logistics (livestreaming, catering, travel, accommodations).
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree required and 5+ years publication management experience in the education sector.

Work Format Details
This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
