Deputy Editor

New Posted 5 February 2024 | Charlotte Metro | Headline USA

Headline USA, a conservative political news site based in Charlotte, NC, is seeking applicants for a full-time deputy editor position. The position is for on-site candidates only. Those unable to relocate to Charlotte need not apply.

Those requiring a work sponsorship or visa to reside legally in the country need not apply.

We are seeking a dynamic, self-motivated individual who can strike the right balance of accepting feedback and direction as needed, in addition to offering it to others when called upon, both with equal grace and professionalism.

As deputy, you may be expected to demonstrate independence and initiative in generating story ideas and producing content on what can, at times, be a busy production cycle with four different emails going out daily, each containing 4-5 compelling and highly clickable headlines.

You will need already to have mastered the compositional basics of newswriting, grammar, AP style and other language skills fundamental to producing flawless copy, both in your own writing and in that of the freelancers you will regularly edit.

You also will need sound editorial judgment to edit bias out of syndicated wire content and make it consistent with the tone and perspective that we aim to represent.

Daily responsibilities will include regular writing assignments (2-3 per day on average, depending on the assignments) as well as editing and posting freelance drafts and syndicated copy using a Wordpress CMS.

The deputy editor also will be responsible for filling in when the editor is on leave. Some work outside of normal shift hours may be expected, as needed.

Additional duties may include helping to compile headlines for email distribution, curating Disqus comments, posting content on social media and exploring other ways of promoting content to new audiences as we strive to become one of the leading brands in our field.

We are particularly interested in candidates who have past experience building and maintaining a large social-media audience, and those with experience in marketing or promoting content to other media, such as podcasts and on-camera appearances.

Previous news-writing experience is necessary, preferably in the political field. Be prepared to provide a selection of writing samples highlighting previous work.

Knowledge of basic multimedia/graphic design, basic HTML coding and conservative issues are all strongly encouraged.
