Are you a reporter who’s looking to start the transition into an editor’s role? In this dual position, you’ll spend 50% of your time reporting, while honing your editing skill the other half. To succeed, you’ll need strong time management and organizational skills, the willingness to learn and grow, and, of course, the natural curiosity that comes with being a journalist.
What you’ll do:
-Split your time equally as a reporter for the daily Herald-Standard and as the editor for the weekly Greene County Messenger
-For the daily, function as a general assignment reporter, covering a wide array of stories – everything from features to hard news
-For the weekly, ferret out fun feature pieces, work with freelancers to execute them, and edit them for print
-Take great photos to accompany stories
-File and upload content to our CMS
-Deliver high quality work that meets set deadlines
What you bring:
-A degree in journalism or a related field, or equivalent experience
-A solid understanding of reporting and editing fundamentals, including a familiarity with AP Style
-Excellent organizational, time management and communication skills
-The drive to look for compelling stories, be they offbeat fun ones or deep dives on bigger issues
-A creative and collaborative spirit
-The ability to accept feedback and adapt to it
What to send our way:
-A resume and cover letter, telling us why you would be the ideal candidate for this dual role
-Clips of past writing/editing so we can see what you can do
