Wirecutter is seeking a senior staff writer to write how-to pieces, explainers, and guides on software platforms, settings, and apps that help readers get more utility out of the devices they own. The ideal candidate will have experience covering tech software and apps for a general audience, as well as privacy and security topics. The senior staff writer will also take on testing and reporting for Wirecutter’s review coverage of VPNs, password managers, and two-factor authentication apps, among other assignments. You will report to the senior editor heading up an editorial team that focuses on computing more broadly, including laptops, smartphones, and computing accessories, and will often work on content that crosses categories.Experience covering consumer technology at a major media outlet is required. You will be closely attuned to the consumer tech news cycle as it pertains to software updates and new app features.This role can be based in our Long Island City, New York office with the option to be fully remote.
Responsibilities
Pitch, research, report, and write multiple short-form pieces per week about the software, apps, and operating systems we rely on every day
Contribute to long-form guides on software and apps
Stay attuned to what Wirecutter and New York Times readers want to know about the software platforms that power their devices
Test beta/preview versions of iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows as part of researching and reporting how-to pieces, explainers, and guides
Collaborate with photo, video, and illustration departments to produce visuals to support articles
May be required to attend trade shows and product news events as needed to build contacts and expertise in relevant topic areas
Perform related work as assigned
Basic Qualifications
5+ years experience writing or editing reviews of consumer technology products and services at a major publication or media company
Experience with project management tools such as Trello, Basecamp, Asana and similar platforms, as well as the ability to build testing plans and evaluation criteria for software, apps, and services.
Preferred Qualifications
Deep familiarity with iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows
Ability to work collaboratively and patiently through multiple rounds of edits and balance the demands of multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
Excellent communication and task management skills; ability to work efficiently in a remote work environment via Slack and Zoom calls, with a distributed team that works remotely across many time zones

The annual base pay range for this role is between $76,500.00 and $105,000.00.
