Higher Education Dive seeks an experienced senior reporter to provide timely, insightful coverage of the higher ed industry. This includes quick turnaround news coverage, enterprise reporting and more in-depth features analyzing the trends and issues affecting college administrators and staff. The senior reporter will also work with the Higher Education Dive team to conceive and execute bigger editorial projects.
Higher Education Dive is an award-winning publication covering the evolving world of higher education. Senior reporters are expected to own their beat, pitch ideas and pursue ambitious stories based on their source building, keen observations and industry knowledge.
Successful candidates will chase down scoops, juggle daily and longer-term deadlines, and develop and write stories that capture the impact of policy, legislative and legal developments on the higher ed sector. The ideal candidate will be well-sourced with industry stakeholders. This position will report directly to Higher Education Dive’s managing editor.
What you’ll do:
The Higher Education senior reporter will regularly write high-impact stories that lead our coverage, from breaking news briefs to enterprise stories and in-depth features about the trends affecting higher education institutions and their leaders. You will monitor your beat, regularly pitch stories, cultivate relationships with diverse stakeholders and hunt down scoops. The higher education senior reporter will help identify key industry storylines the publication can own and will develop and execute on industry-leading stories.
Qualifications
5+ years experience, with at least 3 years of experience in higher education reporting.
5+ years of experience writing web headlines and editing copy.
A proven track record reporting and writing on the business of higher education.
An interest in issues that impact a national audience of higher ed leaders, including but not limited to how colleges and universities make and manage their revenue, how colleges and universities are dealing with changing demographics and evolving business models, and oversight issues such as governance and accreditation.
Ability to interpret and analyze complex public policy, legal developments, industry trends, and major news stories — and to connect the dots to highlight their impact upon stakeholders and institutions.
Ability to quickly take ownership of specific beats through original reporting and building relationships with important and diverse sources
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced news environment; deadline-oriented time management skills and ability to turn around stories on tight deadlines.
Bachelor's degree or better in journalism, English or related field.
Additional Information
The salary range for the role is $80,000.00 - $100,000.00 depending on experience.
