Insider is hiring a paid U.S.-based editorial fellow to join the Business News/Visual Features desk in January 2024.
Our mission is to inform and inspire the digital generation and become the most influential and loved journalism company. At Insider, we aim to cover the people, companies, and ideas changing our world. Our team members embody and uphold Insider’s three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.
The Role & Team:
The Business News desk covers the most compelling and impactful business stories of the day across a variety of industries, including tech, retail, and transportation; and major companies like Amazon, Meta, Tesla, and Apple.
Visual Features Fellows focus on reported stories with strong visual elements, like retail store tours and explainers on the Boeing 777X’s folding wing tips. Fellows may also write about travel, real estate, business personalities, innovations like 3D-printed homes, and the latest trends emerging on TikTok. They will spend their time doing meaningful work: researching, writing, pitching, and interviewing.
Reporters may also pitch travel assignments, though travel is not required as a condition of employment.
The Visual Features Fellow will report directly to Senior Visual Features Editor Dennis Green, and the role is based out of our New York City office.
Note: Insider is a flexible workplace when it comes to remote work, but an important part of the fellowship is being a part of the newsroom in person for learning opportunities. Fellows are asked to come into our offices at least two days a week.
Key Responsibilities:
Pitch and write visual features using pictures sourced from around the internet or taken in your own backyard.
Research and pitch features, explainers, news stories about the world’s biggest companies.
Collaborate with other reporters and fellows on executing bigger projects.
Develop knowledge and expertise in key reader interest areas.
Hone SEO best practices and become adept at Insider’s style of headline writing
Produce stories that are accurate, error-free, and in line with Insider reporting standards
The ideal candidate has:
An interest in covering the most compelling news from the world’s biggest companies
A keen eye for impactful and potentially market-moving corporate news
A broad knowledge base spanning multiple industries and company types
A fundamental understanding of how corporations conduct business and grow
A nose for identifying any developments that seem unusual and out-of-the-ordinary
Speed, close attention to detail and accuracy, and clean copy
Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:
A passion for digital storytelling, voracious reading habits, and familiarity with digital and social media
Experience reporting and writing (school publications are great!)
Ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
Solid proofreading/copy editing skills and light HTML/Photoshop experience
Salary & Benefits:
The Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week and can be fully remote.
Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
PTO and paid holidays
Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment
