Insider is hiring a fellow to join our Health team in London on a 6-month fellowship.

The Role & Team:

The fellow will be covering health news as it happens, and also researching, writing, pitching, and reporting for health-related stories that aren’t time sensitive. This UK based role will run from January to July 2024.

Insider’s Health team covers a wide range of topics, including fitness and nutrition, public health, supplements, and relationships. Our style is smart, conversational, exciting, and geared toward a general audience. We’re looking for a reporter who is excited to cover the full spectrum of health topics in various ways, including news posts, first person stories, and explainers.

The Insider Fellowship Scheme is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers.

Key responsibilities:

Pitch daily story ideas and work with the assigning editor to cover the most compelling health stories
Conduct interviews and pitch feature stories, explainers, visual features, and other story formats, as required
Produce stories that are accurate, properly researched, error-free, and in line with Insider reporting standards
Hone SEO best practices and become adept at Insider’s style of headline writing

The ideal candidate has:

Experience reporting and writing (university publications are great)
An interest in general health trends and news
The confidence to call/email sources when reporting a story, with guidance from the editors
Familiarity with digital and social media
Ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
Proofreading and copyediting skills

Additionally, we're looking for someone with the following:

A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
A natural curiosity about what's happening near you and around the world
A demonstrated understanding of fact-checking and objective news writing
A familiarity with Insider’s brand

Salary & Benefits:

Fellows are paid an annual salary of £24,000.
Fellows get 10 days annual leave during the 6-month period.
This position starts in Jan 2024 and requires that you work full-time for six months.

Insider is a flexible workplace when it comes to remote work, but an important part of the fellowship is being a part of the newsroom in person for learning opportunities. Fellows are asked to come into our offices in London at least two days a week.
