As a Junior Copy Editor, you will assist in ensuring that AAMC publications are accurate, consistent, and high quality; contribute to efforts around inclusive and bias-free language; and join leadership in educating staff about the importance of putting AAMC values into action when communicating on behalf of the association.
Your contribution will be instrumental in ensuring the AAMC continues to be seen as trustworthy, authoritative, and inclusive. The Junior Copy Editor reports to the Director of Editorial Services.
How will you make an impact?
Edit a wide range of AAMC publications, user guides, conference programs, data snapshots, marketing materials, and other documents on a fast-paced schedule.
Review content of AAMC publications and documents for style, clarity, accuracy, consistency, agreement of elements, copyright and trademark issues, organization, and wordiness as appropriate for a project. Propose rewritten and reorganized text as appropriate.
Understand and apply the appropriate style to any given publication based on purpose and audience, primarily relying on the AP Stylebook and in-house AAMC style guide.
Propose copy to improve titles, headlines, subheads, and basic text as needed.
Assist in adjusting copy as products move from print to the web.
Work closely with authors throughout the editing process to tackle editorial issues and improve writing, raising editorial questions, negotiating changes, providing feedback, and following editorial policies.
Conduct final review and quality check of a wide range of documents before final publication, including high-visibility documents, with attention to publication schedules.
Compare versions of documents to find inconsistencies.
Work with Creative Services team to solve editorial issues related to design (e.g., figures, tables, organization of crafted text).
Review work of freelance editors and provide advice and feedback on AAMC editorial style.
With senior editor, serve as a resident expert on grammar and style questions as they arise. Advise AAMC staff on editorial style issues.
Help maintain AAMC in-house style guide. Propose additions and adjustments as needed.
Communicate with staff about AP style and AAMC in-house style.
With senior editor and editorial services director, propose, revise, and implement standards to improve editorial processes (e.g., checklists for levels of editing and reviewing design proofs, editorial quality standards).
Use project management software to track schedules and workload and be proficient in using editing software to complete tasks.
What You'll Bring To The Role
Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, or related field. Specialized training in copy editing and proofreading highly desirable.
3-5 years of related work experience in an editorial role with regular output of a variety of publications.
Exacting attention to detail, excellent editorial judgment, strong written and verbal communication skills, and ability to adhere to deadlines while providing professional, friendly, client-focused service.
Sound knowledge of publishing processes (print and digital). Must have exceptional organizational skills. Experience in deadline-driven environment essential.
Strong working knowledge of and direct experience with the AP Stylebook, Chicago Manual of Style, AMA Manual of Style, or comparable style manuals.
Knowledge of standard publication cycles from editing through design and production.
Experience using editing and project management software required.
Must be highly collaborative but also must be able to work independently.
Experience working with authors to solve editorial issues and improve writing is required.
Must be able to work with multiple clients and have strong interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of the editorial process and print and digital production is essential; graphic design knowledge is helpful but not required.
