The Kansas City Star offers a robust internship program that includes 10 spring and summer positions covering a wide variety of responsibilities. Many current Star newsroom staff members started at the company as interns, and we're proud to continue the tradition by welcoming you and other top students again this year.
Here are our available positions for the spring and summer of 2023:
Spring legislative reporters - We have two positions available. One will cover the Missouri General Assembly out of the statehouse in Jefferson City. One will cover the Kansas Legislature out of the statehouse in Topeka. The successful candidates will be college juniors, seniors or recent graduates with a strong interest in political/government coverage and experience reporting through previous professional internships and/or collegiate media. These interns will report to our political editor.
Summer breaking news and general assignment reporter - We have two positions available.The successful candidates will be college juniors, seniors or recent graduates with experience reporting through previous professional internships and/or collegiate media. Strong writing and reporting skills as well as social media and multimedia abilities will be required. These interns will report to our breaking news editors.
Summer business news reporter - We have one position available. The successful candidate will be a University of Missouri journalism school junior, senior or recent graduate who has a strong interest in business journalism. The ability to find business stories that are relevant and of interest to Kansas City readers is a must. We are not looking for stories on businesses' quarterly reports or stock market performance, but instead we want news about business that affects people's lives. Some non-business stories will be assigned as needed. Past newsroom internship experience preferred. This intern will report to our investigations editor.
Summer sports reporter - We have two positions available. The successful candidates will be college juniors, seniors or recent graduates who have a strong interest in sports journalism. They will cover breaking sports news, events and enterprise stories. We’re looking for a reporter who can spot a good sports story and know how to write it. Video and social media skills also are a must. Past newsroom internship experience preferred. These interns will report to our sports editor.
Summer video storyteller/photographer - We have one position available. The successful candidate will be a college junior, senior or recent graduate who will join our visuals team for the summer to work with an award-winning team of journalists dedicated to producing journalism that makes a difference in our community. Interns at The Star will be given daily assignments but will also have an opportunity to be right in the middle of helping out with some of our bigger, high-impact projects. Past newsroom internship experience preferred. This intern will report to our visuals editor.
