MahoningMatters.com is looking for a reporter/editor to help cover the city of Youngstown, Ohio and the Mahoning Valley. The reporter/editor will join a small, nimble staff of Mahoning Matters, a civic-minded community digital news source. Mahoning Matters was founded in October 2019 with the mission to tell the stories that matter in the Mahoning Valley and empower citizens to engage in their community with a focus on solutions and digital experimentation. The ideal candidate should be comfortable juggling and shifting priorities throughout the day, and will focus primarily on writing both newstories and newsletter content, while also helping to edit as needed. You’ll work collaboratively with the senior editor and contributors in your own newsroom, but also with journalists in nearby regions in McClatchy. This reporter/editor should have a strong background in digital news, reporting and storytelling, and will be expected to utilize digital analytics and tools to the newsroom’s benefit. You should be comfortable with reporting across a variety of topics, including breaking news, enterprise and service-oriented news with high utility value. The ideal candidate should be comfortable experimenting with how we tell and distribute stories on digital platforms. They should be familiar with using digital analytics to evaluate story performance, identifying audiences and how we reach them. The position requires collaboration with other teams to distribute content to multiple platforms, especially through daily email newsletters.
