The managing editor will be responsible for directing the newsroom staff in writing and producing a newspaper and digital platforms that inform the community with timely, accurate, interesting, and compelling news, sports, and feature stories of local interest. The managing editor will be responsible for hiring, developing, scheduling, and motivating the newsroom team. We are looking for a candidate who is positive, outgoing, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and willing to quickly adapt to meet the community’s needs — particularly as Lahaina rebuilds following the devastating fire of 2023. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Oversee all editorial department operations.
Adapt to an ever-evolving journalism industry, which requires flexibility, creativity, and implementation of synergistic solutions.
Help to develop and maintain an effective and efficient editorial department strategy that focuses on local reporting of news, sports, people, entertainment, the arts, and the outdoors.
Be hands-on with the newsroom as a part of the team, which includes writing, editing, page design, and website maintenance. The managing editor will help direct daily coverage and lead a daily budget meeting; plan long-term enterprise projects; work with reporters to improve their copy; provide training and cross-training for various newsroom roles; work with page designers to improve the newspaper’s appearance; and keep the community informed in a timely manner at mauinews.com.
Uphold the newspaper’s high standards of journalism.
Oversee the newspaper’s digital presence through its website and also its social media platforms.
Assist in the process for talent acquisition to recruit and retain high quality employees with an opportunity to grow within the company.
Enhance the newspaper's presence in the community.
Coordinate and work cooperatively with other newspaper departments to maximize efficiency and effectiveness of newspaper operations.
Requirements:
Significant relevant newsroom experience. This position requires exceptional writing and editing skills, solid leadership skills, and editorial writing ability.
Excellent communication skills to deal with staff, readers, community leaders, public officials, other department heads, and the publisher.
Ability to plan and work efficiently to meet deadlines.
Pay:
Pay under the Union Scale ranges from $26,088.92 to $50,966.24 annually. However, the Company will provide a supplement above the scale amount based upon the hired applicant’s experience and talent, in the Company’s discretion.
