The Marin Independent Journal, an award-winning daily newspaper just north of San Francisco, is seeking a sharp and enthusiastic reporter. We are a dynamic and fast-paced daily, covering Marin County's 11 cities and towns with an intelligent readership and a variety of hot-button community issues. We want to talk to strong writers who are curious and thoughtful, pay keen attention to detail and are fired up about telling good stories. Reporters at the Independent Journal are responsible for daily stories for web and print, short web hits and briefs, live event coverage, city government meetings coverage, features and enterprise-style pieces for section fronts and digital platforms.
What you will do:
The reporter will be responsible for daily stories for web and print, short web hits and briefs, live event coverage, features and enterprise-style pieces for section fronts, all while posting, tweeting, taking iPhone photos and video, and live blogging
Cover breaking news stories and develop in-depth feature pieces
Conduct interviews with sources to gather information for articles
Research and fact-check information to ensure accuracy and credibility
Write clear, concise and accurate news stories for print, online, and social media platforms
Attend press conferences, community events, and other gatherings to report on news and issues relevant to the beat
Collaborate with editors and other reporters to develop story ideas and angles
Use digital tools and platforms to enhance reporting and engage with readership
Develop expertise and familiarity with the people, organizations, and institutions in the beat region to better inform reporting
What you will bring:
2+ years of journalism experience
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related fields
Excellent news judgment and an interest in local news and current events in Marin County
Strong news writing skill under deadline pressure
The ability to juggle multiple stories of varying complexity
The ability to report in multiple languages is a plus
Must be located in the Bay Area.

The hourly wage is $23.00 - $25.00.
