The Insider Editor

We are looking for an aggressive, news-breaking journalist to be the Insider Editor for the NC Insider, a publication of The News & Observer in Raleigh, North Carolina.

This journalist will be based in Raleigh and will direct news coverage for the Insider State Government News Service, writing and editing news relating to the North Carolina legislature, state government and political campaigns.

The Insider Editor will be expected to produce exclusives for the Insider email newsletter and for the News & Observer digital publication and newspaper, including stories that hold officials accountable and unearth the impact of their actions. In producing content for the Insider newsletter, this journalist will work to identify topics that aren’t being covered in other news outlets and are of particular interest to the business and government affairs communities.

In addition to writing their own stories and news items, the Insider Editor will coordinate the work of others producing original content for the Insider newsletter. This journalist will ensure the Insider contracts with one or more dependable freelance reporters and will plan and edit their work, in collaboration with The N&O’s politics editor. The Insider Editor will plan and edit Insider newsletter content from N&O staffers covering the legislature.

The Insider Editor will direct the production of a state news roundup for the five-day-a-week email newsletter, coordinating with Insider production and calendar editors, and managing relationships with press partners across the state.

This journalist will participate in multimedia productions, including podcasts, and assist in the planning and staging of news panels and other events.

Like all journalists at McClatchy, the Insider Editor must have the desire and the skill to build audience loyalty, engagement and growth. They must be idea generators and have knowledge of the issues important to our audiences. An understanding of North Carolina politics and policy issues is desirable.

This position will require enthusiastic participation in ongoing conversations about what’s working and what’s not, and an equally enthusiastic commitment to adapting accordingly.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, preferably in journalism or related field.

Experience: 10 years of reporting experience in a news organization.

What You'll Bring

Exceptional reporting, writing and editing skills.

Adept at building source networks and having a constant flow of story ideas.

Knowledge of the legislative process in general, and of North Carolina politics in particular, is strongly desired.

Experience working in multiple publishing platforms is a plus.

Must be familiar with AP style and able to work independently to produce clean copy under deadline.

Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

Ability to work collaboratively to aggressively tackle stories and make McClatchy first and best.
