Southwest News Media, a subsidiary of MediaNews Group, is seeking an Editor to join the team! We are located less than a half hour from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul and are looking for an experienced journalist to work in collaboration with members of our news team that produces six weekly newspapers that focus on eight vibrant suburban communities. MNG publishes award-winning content (49 Pulitzers) that engages a nationwide audience via multi-media platforms including web, mobile, social and print.

What You Will Do

Serve as one of two editors for our six print newspapers
Work in collaboration with our news team that produces six weekly newspapers focusing on eight suburban communities
Edit and provide content for our print and digital products
Lead, train, and offer professional guidance to our news team; establish best practices and constantly evaluate new opportunities to serve our readers
Establish good working relationships within our organization and within the communities we serve
Be highly focused on the gathering of local news, and then determine its most appropriate use and presentation
Proficiency in using a content management system
Must live in the Twin Cities metro area and within 20 miles of the Southwest News Media coverage area; communities served include: Savage, Prior Lake, Shakopee, Jordan, Chaska, Carver, Chanhassen and Victoria
Provide guidance on best practices while constantly evaluating how we can improve our use of all media platforms to grow our following
Organizes and leads regular training sessions for editorial staff members to ensure all have the skills and tools needed to complete job expectations
Collaborate with sales leader in determining/scheduling content related to special “advertorial” publications/projects

What You Will Bring

Bachelor’s degree (with comparable experience) in journalism or related field
Experience in multi-media reporting breaking news, politics and feature writing
Ability to constantly assess trending content and best practices that are relevant and/or of interest to our readers
Must possess a sense of urgency to be “first” in providing accurate content that impacts our local communities
Be a trusted resource throughout the organization
Willingness to work occasional nights, weekends and holidays
Candidate must have a valid driver’s license with a driving record that is insurable by the company while maintaining reliable transportation
