Job Introduction

Metro’s audience division is expanding and we are looking for an Audience Trends Editor to source and commission original content on the back of SEO and social media trends.

Are you an internet sleuth with a passion for news and entertaining content? Frequently in the know about the latest trends everyone is talking about? Do you know what makes stories highly engaging and attractive to readers? We are looking for someone full of ideas to commission content that feels fresh and relevant to digital audiences.

This is a newly created role within Metro’s audience division. This position would suit a journalist looking to step into a commissioning role in audience development, as well as social media or SEO producers looking to step up.

Metro brings news, sport, analysis, features, opinion, and everything in between to a fast-growing global audience. This is an exciting time to join a growing team as we shape the news product vision to strengthen Metro’s position as a must-visit news and entertainment platform.

About the role:

You’ll be trawling through all corners of the internet, including social media platforms such as Reddit, TikTok, YouTube and more to source original stories for Metro journalists.

You’ll edit articles to a high standard, ensuring all content conforms to SEO best practice. The successful candidate may have to rewrite copy as needed, including headlines and re-selling content for various platforms.

You may be commissioning explainers around the news, sourcing original case studies or resurfacing extraordinary stories from the past with a new flair.

Responsibilities:

Monitoring social media and search trends
Source original case studies
Commission trending and original stories across Metro verticals
Use analytics to inform content strategy and understand what makes Metro readers tick
Ensure the newsroom is conceiving, executing and optimising stories with high reader interest
Editing headlines and sells that are optimised for SEO, social and direct audiences
Work closely with SEO, social and third-party platforms teams to ensure Metro’s quality content is optimised and reaching audiences across relevant channels

About you:

2 or more years’ experience working in a newsroom
A strong understanding of audience metrics, social and SEO principles
Ability to think under pressure and help commissioning of content around developing stories
Excellent interpersonal skills to work with key executives in the newsroom
Understanding of the Metro voice
Understanding of the UK Editors' Code of Practice, media and copyright law
Ability to make data-led editorial decisions in a fast-paced environment is a must
Flexibility to work evening shifts and weekends as required
