Modern Healthcare, the authoritative source for healthcare business news, is seeking a full-time, Washington, D.C.-based correspondent to cover the healthcare policy and regulatory beat.

The reporter will cover developments in programs such as Medicare and Medicaid by tracking regulations and other actions taken by the Health and Human Services Department and other agencies that influence policy. The reporter also will write stories about how federal, state and local policies affect healthcare companies, their employees, their patients and their communities. The regulations reporter will work closely with our Washington-based political reporter and collaborate with our entire Chicago-based team of healthcare business journalists.

This position requires a reporter capable of writing breaking news, analysis and deeper enterprise stories for our digital publication and our biweekly magazine for an audience primarily composed of executives at hospitals, insurance companies, physician groups and more. The regulations reporter will need to build sources inside federal healthcare agencies and lobbying organizations. Modern Healthcare reporters also contribute to our multimedia projects, including videos and podcasts.

Basic Qualifications

In journalism or related field
A minimum of three years of reporting experience
Experience covering healthcare, government or both
Must be a self-starter who wants to break news, is motivated by excellence and enjoys

working with editors and other reporters

Ability to meet deadlines and file clean, concise and comprehensive copy on complex

subjects with a high degree of accuracy, balance and relatability

Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and must be

curious and able to generate enterprise feature ideas

Must have attention to detail, industry knowledge and the ability to interpret data for

trend stories

Must demonstrate an ability to mine legislation and regulatory filings for incisive stories
Ability to work remotely in Washington while keeping editors and colleagues informed

of assignments and developments

Minimum of three recent clips

Preferences

Experience covering regulatory agencies, Congress and/or healthcare policy issues
Experience developing sources in regulatory agencies, trade associations and lobbying

organizations

Web publishing, multimedia and social media experience
Interest and skills in database journalism

This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay.

Pay Transparency Disclosure:

The estimated salary range for this position is $60,000 to $80,000.
