NBC News Digital is hiring a reporter for its Culture & Trends team to help cover news, trends, personalities and cultural shifts that are native to the internet and social platforms — with expertise, voice, depth and original reporting. Do you live and breathe internet culture? If so, this role is for you. This reporter will cover how technology is reshaping culture, and the ways online influencers are reorienting our world. They will also look at news happening across the globe and find ways to approach the news coverage from the internet culture lens. This reporter will also contribute to coverage of important news events, including in the entertainment space, that cross over into the internet culture threshold. This reporter will help cover significant new stories that unfold online. We are particularly interested in topics that you mine from your own timelines – what you’re seeing out there, what you’ve observed online that could be a revelatory or distinct angle into a big internet culture story. This reporter will produce 1-2 daily stories, as well as 1-2 weekly features. The work will include a mix of quick hits on what’s trending (like when TikTok star Remi Bader said a ranch wouldn’t allow her to ride horses due to her weight); explainers (like why Elmo feuded with a rock or how Duo the big green owl became a TikTok star); and thoughtful reported pieces (like this deep dive into how some creators warn Johnny Depp's online fandom is toxic toward domestic abuse survivors). This is a full-time position. It is represented by the NY News Guild - CWA. New York or Los Angeles-based candidates preferred.
