Job Description
WTVJ, NBC Universal Local’s Television Station in South Florida, is looking for a political reporter who has proven experience of breaking and following important political stories and telling them in a thought-provoking and authentic way. The political reporter should be able to build a large list of contacts and sources in the community to help find important stories and angles. We want someone with curiosity and passion for going beyond the surface of the story and a storyteller who can make political content engaging and relatable.
Break and Enterprise political stories in South Florida.
Ensure stories are told in a compelling way with context and perspective
Build relevant contacts and sources within the community
Deliver live and recorded news events/stories authentically, accurately and in a compelling and engaging manner
Ensure news gathering and storytelling techniques are in line with NBC News legal/standards guidelines
Identify and pitch angles on big political news stories
Aggressively follow up and pursue additional angles to the political news of the day, including breaking exclusive information
Work with other political reporters, desk and managers to create a political calendar and long-range plan
Produce fact-checking stories with political partners
Post digital content of daily stories
Identify and produce additional digital content for stories when appropriate or assigned
Use social media to promote stories and engage viewers
Be willing and able to cover other news stories including breaking news when needed/assigned
Qualifications
Minimum 3 years of experience in newsgathering and/or news production
B.A. degree or equivalent in areas such as Journalism & Communications, or related field.
Desired Characteristics
Ability and willingness to edit video when needed
Strong journalistic and communication skills
Excellent writing, storytelling and live reporting skills with the ability to juggle multiple daily and short-term projects
Ability to calmly handle live, breaking news situations and changing events
Possess strong, detail-orientated research and writing skills
Ability to speak and understand Spanish a plus
Have a creative approach to digital platforms
Strong, working knowledge of how to use social media to strengthen the brand, interact with viewers and promote stories
Collaborative team player
Strong understanding and demonstration of editorial judgment and journalistic ethics, including a current knowledge of laws of libel, slander and applicable FCC rules and regulations
Demonstrated ability to solve problems and prioritize work
Familiarity with emerging news production techniques and technology, with a pioneering spirit and desire to learn more
