Job Introduction

New Scientist is the world’s leading weekly science and technology magazine. We are seeking an US editor to run the news team out of our New York office.

Founded in 1956 for “all those interested in scientific discovery and its social consequences”, New Scientist has teams in New York and London that cover international news from a scientific standpoint and ask the biggest-picture questions about life, the universe, and what it means to be human.

To win this role, you will need substantial news, features, digital and team leadership experience. You will be a highly collaborative, self-motivated, can-do individual who thrives in small teams and is able to work brilliantly with colleagues both in person and at a distance.

Main Responsibilities

Run the US news operation and shape our coverage, determining how to respond to breaking news, commission stories that inject New Scientist into the national conversation in the US and more
Responsibility for all content produced by the US editorial team
Line management responsibility for all US news editors and sub editor
Smooth collaboration with global colleagues
Work with UK colleagues to optimize global ways of working, from picture editing and sub editing to news and feature commissioning
Work with UK colleagues to ensure smooth production of the magazine and any other print products, and excellence generally in print
Provide strong leadership for US team
Represent New Scientist at events, on podcasts, the radio and television
Grow new US team members into New Scientist journalists
And of course …. produce world-class journalism, across all platforms

Person Specification

A strong background in science journalism
News and features editing experience
Excellent editorial judgment, writing skills and attention to detail
Excellent time management, planning and organising skills
Strong management experience
A good understanding of the US science journalism market
Strong digital AND print experience

Skills & Behaviours:

A keen interest in audience development and the fast-changing digital journalism landscape.
An understanding of the different audience needs across different platforms.
Excellent editorial judgement and attention to detail.
Clear communication skills.
A passion for science and technology.

Our generous benefits package for US employees includes health, dental and optical care, 401k and paid family leave in line with New York state law. US employees have 15 vacation days in addition to 10 public holidays and may purchase up to five additional vacation days each year should they wish to. We have a hybrid working model in place with three in-office days each week.
