News Producer

New Posted 10 July 2020 | New York, NY | Last Week Tonight

Last Week Tonight is looking to hire a News Producer. The position encompasses a number of responsibilities: pitching stories; investigating subjects as a news reporter (phone interviews, archival research); assembling research memos to provide to the show’s comedy writers; shepherding our main stories through each stage of production, helping shape everything from the narrative of the story to the graphics; and thoroughly fact-checking stories. Some investigative reporting experience is preferred, as we may be critical of certain companies or public officials and need someone who can both handle potentially hostile calls and backstop their own work for the show’s attorneys.

It would obviously be a step away from traditional journalism, but it’s a great opportunity for someone willing to sacrifice a byline and work odd hours (including weekends), all while learning how to tell stories for our show’s unique format. We are seeking someone with strong news judgment and journalistic sensibilities — this is not a good fit for an aspiring comedy writer. Our office is working remotely for the foreseeable future, but this position will eventually be based in New York. Interested applicants should email their resume, a short cover letter or bio, and any relevant clips to Research-resumes@partiallyimportant.com by July 23, 6 PM Eastern.
